What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?

Popularized by Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence is the ability to recognize our own feelings and those of others, to motivate ourselves, and to manage emotions well within ourselves and in our relationships.

Unlike IQ (Intelligence Quotient), which is relatively static, EQ can be developed throughout life. Having a high IQ can get you into college, but it's a high EQ that will keep you in the job and ensure healthy relationships.

Emotional Master

You have a high degree of self-awareness and excellent relationship management.

You understand what you feel and, more importantly, why you feel it. You can stay calm in conflicts, are empathetic with others' pain, and know how to express your feelings assertively, without being too aggressive or passive.

In Evolution

You already have good emotional tools, but still oscillate in moments of stress.

You recognize your emotions, but sometimes they still take control before you can react. You have good empathy skills, although on bad days you may become more reactive. You're on the right path of self-knowledge.

Awakened to Feeling

You still have difficulty identifying and managing what you feel.

For you, emotions can seem confusing or irrelevant. You are often caught by surprise by outbursts of anger or sadness without understanding the origin. There may be a tendency to rationalize everything, ignoring the human aspect of conflicts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is emotional intelligence about 'being nice'?

No. Emotional intelligence is about being assertive. Sometimes, it means giving tough feedback constructively or saying a firm but respectful 'no'.

How can I improve my emotional intelligence daily?

The practice of pausing is the simplest and most powerful. Between the stimulus (what happened) and the response (what you do), there is a space. It is in this space that your emotional freedom lives.
